High-roof vans like Transits and Sprinters function as high-leverage machines. These vehicles have a high center of gravity, which creates a massive amount of lateral weight transfer every time a driver makes a turn. Even if your alignment is set perfectly to factory specifications, the sheer physics of a loaded van causes the tire to roll onto its shoulder.

This is what we call tread scrub. As the van turns, the outer edge of the tire is physically dragged across the asphalt rather than rolling cleanly over it. Because the rubber is being forced to sideways-skid on a microscopic level, the tread blocks begin to feather or sawtooth.

Most fleet owners think an outer-edge wear pattern means they need an alignment. In reality, for a van frequently navigating the tight turns around the mall, it’s often a sign that the tire’s Load Range or inflation pressure isn’t optimized for the constant lateral stress of last-mile delivery.

How Westnedge Traffic Lights Cook Your Fleet Rubber

By the time we reach May, the Kalamazoo sun has begun to bake the asphalt on South Westnedge Avenue. For a delivery driver, the stretch between I-94 and Milham Avenue is a gauntlet of heat. Every time a driver hits the brakes at a red light, the kinetic energy of several tons of vehicle is converted into thermal energy at the brake rotors.

This heat doesn’t just vanish; it soaks into the wheel hubs and the tire beads. This constant heat cycling causes the rubber compounds to undergo a process called thermo-oxidative degradation. Essentially, the rubber begins to harden and lose its elasticity.

If you only look at the center, you’re missing the fact that the tire is legally bald on the edge and prone to a sidewall failure. We also use durometers to test the hardness of the rubber. If the tire has been heat-cycled too many times on Westnedge, the durometer will tell us that the grip is gone, even if the tread is deep.

Last week, we pulled a 2024 Sprinter off a Crossroads route that had failed a ‘visual’ inspection elsewhere. The center tread was 7/32″, but my durometer showed the rubber had hardened to a 75 Shore A rating—effectively turning the tire into a plastic hockey puck. We pulled it for safety before the next rain
